Volunteer Positions

Grocery Benefits Program
Money earned in these programs goes directly to the school. Find out about the Giant and Safeway receipts programs and coordinate efforts to enroll NSPA families. You may send two or three all-school emails to encourage families to sign up. You will be the school's contact with Giant and Safeway. This is generally no more than 3-4 hours in the fall, and 2-3 hours in the spring.

Staff Meeting Snack Coordinator
Work with class representatives to find volunteers to send in refreshments each Wednesday for New School teachers' meetings. Coordinate with Val and Kathy in the office. Maintain a calendar and answer any questions from snack volunteers. Generally about 4 or 5 hours to set up early in the year, then about an hour a month to make sure things are going smoothly. If someone can't fulfill their promised time, find a replacement quickly.

Appreciation Days Planners
Each year, we like to say thank you to our hard-working office staff and teachers. These parents solicit a small voluntary contribution from families through a letter, collect the proceeds, and then plan a gift and/or treat for Val for Administrative Professionals Day in April. They also plan an event for the teachers (usually a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon) May 16 this year. This involves scouting and choosing a restaurant and menu, making reservations, and inviting the teachers. This work can easily be divided into those tasks that fit what various parents wish to do, such as copying and mailing out letters, collecting and totaling checks, visiting a couple of restaurants, making the final plans, and attending the luncheon with two or three board members. Information from past years is available to help you.

Ski Trip
Work with the teacher community coordinator and the students, to plan a ski trip, usually over the January break: help to decide what kind of trip (1-day or 2-day), research places and transportation, send out emails and a flyer, accompany students. About 8-12 hours planning and communication. Information from last year is available

Field Day Picnic. Wednesday, June 4, 2008, 11:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m
Help shop, organize, cook hotdogs, and serve watermelon, drinks, chips, and ice cream at this fun picnic for students and teachers. About four parents needed, 11 am to 2 pm, plus shopping. Picnic organizer: send out email to organize, ask for two charcoal grills, stay to clean up. Coolers and ice needed.

Parent Social
Help us find a host/hostess family, or choose a location. This is a well-attended potluck dinner, for parents and teachers (generally about 75 people) - a pleasant social occasion. Help with invitations, set-up and clean up; be the host family.

Auction Committee
Our Silent Auction/Spring Social is March 1, but planning begins in January. Help with publicity, mailing, the catalog, auction set-up, bid recording. Work with seniors to promote the auction, which helps to pay for graduation, among other things. Help set up all the items and decorate the Friday evening before the auction. The senior class representative will chair, but she needs lots of help.

Prom Coordinator
Work with the junior students on the Prom Committee to help them plan, fundraise, and execute this year's prom; a fun, informal dance open to all high-school students. Meet with students once or twice, keep in touch by phone or email. Contact hotel management, review contract, arrange for a DJ, plan decorations, make ticket sales sheets. You'll get complete notes from last year's coordinators. Planning time, 2-3 hours/month, more in May. We also need a parent or two to help with decorations the afternoon of the prom.

Open House Hosts and Hostesses
We need a hostess or host who will bring and set up beverages and cookies for our three Sunday afternoon open houses, chat with visitors, then clean up afterwards. About 3-31/2 hours each time (the event itself begins at 2pm and ends at 4pm). This job could be shared between two parents. We also need parents to act as tour guides and hosts for prospective parents visiting the open house. This is a good way to learn more about the classes, as you take families around the school.
